What are stretch marks (also known as striae)?

In skin aesthetics, one of the most common complaints is the appearance of stretch marks, also known as pregnancy stretch marks. Although, they are more common in women than in men, men may also experience these in their first phase purplish reddish streaks, which over time become whitish and glossy in appearance. These lines develop perpendicular to the direction of skin tension. They often affect the belly, hip, buttocks, thighs, or even the breasts.

Stretch marks often result from a rapid weight gain, from pregnancy or from sudden growth in puberty. They form in the dermis, where the connective tissue is stretched beyond the limits of its elasticity because of the rapid growth of the skin. Little wonder, that stretch marks most commonly develop during pregnancy, as pregnancy requires looser structure in the connective tissue.
